Eight Awajún communities have taken part in prior consultation over the building of a 57 km road to link two small towns, Urakusa, Huampami and a number of Awajún communities in the municipality of Condorcanqui, Amazonas region.

The plan for prior consultation was drawn up in a meeting arranged by the Ministry of Culture, the local mayor’s office and community representatives. The plan lays out a timetable for consultations between now and the end of the year. This will involve visits and workshops by the mayor’s office in each of the communities concerned and sessions in which the communities will discuss the project among themselves.

A formal dialogue process will get under way in the second half of January.
