Climate Change Introduction

Why Should Climate Change be a Priority in Peru?

Two important reports on the impacts of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC ) Special Report on Emissions Scenarios and the Stern Review, place Peru as one of the countries that will be most affected by the effects of climate change.

Peru is responsible for just 0.1% of global CO2 emissions but is one of the countries suffering the most from the impacts of climate change.

Figures from the Special Report on Emissions Scenarios indicate that Peru in South America will see the greatest temperature rises due to climate change. Their figures predict a dry season average temperature increase of between 0.7°C and 1.8°C by 2020 and between 1°C and 4°C by 2050. The Stern Review also confirms that Peru is one of the world’s most climate vulnerable countries.

The Stern Review

The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change is an independent report commissioned by the Chancellor of the Exchequer as a contribution to assessing the evidence and building understanding of the economics of climate change. It was conducted by Sir Nicholas Stern, Head of the UK Government Economic Service, and a former Chief Economist of the World Bank. The Review considers the economic costs of the impacts of climate change, and the costs and benefits of action to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases.
