On June 25, Gregorio Santos, the regional president of Cajamarca, was arrested and jailed on corruption charges. Santos, who spearheaded the protests against the Conga mine in Cajamarca, has long been in the government’s firing line for his refusal to back down on the Conga issue. Amongst other things, he is accused of misuse of public funds. His arrest is likely to lead to strong opposition from his followers in Cajamarca, where he intended to run for the regional presidency once again in October.
