On 15 to 17 June there was a national human and environmental defenders meeting in Lima attended by more than 70 defenders from all over the country. The meeting was also attended by observers from the European Union, the UK and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as the national Congress and the Ministry for the Environment.

Those present demanded attention from the State and an end to the criminalisation of protests, as well as the holding of a national assembly to write a new constitution.

On 17 June the defenders organised protests outside the Ministries of Justice and the Interior.

The principal agreements with the Ministry of Justice included the revision of the contracts made between the national police and the mining companies; a meeting about a plenary agreement on 20 June; and the creation of an inter-agency group to coordinate interventions in response to the violation of the rights of defenders. Regarding the Ministry of the Interior, the defenders achieved an agreement by the Ministry to create a technical team with the participation of rights defenders to oversee the functioning of protocols for attending to defenders within the framework of the multisectoral mechanism.

Though much still needs to be done for the defenders if they are to be heard and protected as allies of the state in the defence of their territories and ecosystems, those present considered the meeting to have been a good start.
