5 July was the day that the Supreme Court was to adjudicate on whether Keiko Fujimori should be released from jail or not. Just before the session was due to begin, one of the judges, Jorge Castañeda, was obliged to retire from judging the case following recordings being played between himself and disgraced former Supreme Court judge, César Hinostroza, now a fugitive from justice, on a TV news programme, casting doubt as to his impartiality. The case will now probably be heard later this month with another judge Susana Castañeda Otzu taking his place.
