The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) has agreed not to go ahead with prior consultation (consulta previa) with indigenous groups resident in Block 192 before an overall plan for consulta previa is approved with representative local indigenous federations.

The MEM had previously approved a plan with other indigenous groups, but it was claimed that these were unrepresentative. A fresh preparatory meeting will be held with the more representative indigenous federations at the beginning of May. It has signalled that the plan for consulta previa will have to be agreed before any new 40-year contract is signed for oil exploitation in the block.

However, an article by Jaime Antezana,  points to continuing concerns among indigenous peoples in Loreto region about oil exploitation there. He reports on the decision to embark on an indefinite stoppage in the Corriente and Tigre basins, and the possibility extending to other river basins on the region (Nauta, Requena and Datem de Marañon). The region encapsulates more than 500 communities, organised in 30 federations. The peoples of this district continue to emphasise how developments in the oil industry provide scant benefits to the peoples living in the region and produce multiple environmental problems.
