It was with great sadness that we learnt this last week of the death of Gonzalo Portocarrero, a leading Peruvian sociologist. He had fought off cancer for four and a half years, but finally succumbed on 22 March. His contribution to the understanding of Peru and its culture was enormous, using as he did the everyday and mundane to explain the nature of society as a whole. We will miss him greatly. His velorio was a testament to the esteem he enjoyed not just in the academic world but in civil society more broadly. For a useful account of his work and its impact, view here.
