Among many effects of the flooding disaster is that on the transport of minerals from Peru’s central region to the coast. This region accounts for at least one-fifth of Peru’s metal production, according to the National Society of Mining and Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE), and one kilometre of the rail link that the mining companies rely upon has been destroyed by landslides and flooding along the Rímac river.

Repair work cannot start until the rains recede and, at present, water levels in the river are still rising. The repairs will take at least two weeks and can, at best, be expected to begin only in two weeks’ time, according to Vizcarra.

Warehouses at Callao docks have enough to fulfil companies’ commitments for some 30 days, says the SNMPE.
