Pedro Pablo Kuczynski visited, on 20 January, Cocachacra, the centre of opposition to Southern Peru Copper’s proposed open cast copper mine, Tía María, in Arequipa. Greeted by a vociferous crowd opposed to Tía María, he brought a piece of paper on which promises were made to build a reservoir to provide water to the Tambo valley, to improve healthcare provision and educational facilities. He made a quick speech lasting no more than ten minutes, which he began by saying “don’t talk to me of Tía María, I have not come to talk about that”.
