On 15 June, El Peruano (the official government gazette) published an important new norm governing the difficult proceedings at Las Bambas, the potentially huge Chinese-owned copper mine in Apurímac. After repeated requests from local groups, the name of the forum has been changed from a ‘mesa de trabajo’ (or working group) to a ‘mesa de diálogo’ (or dialogue forum). Its objectives have also been revised to include the specifically environmental dimension.

The goal of the forum now includes “actions to achieve appropriate management in protecting fundamental rights ( … ) and participative monitoring and the necessary actions to achieve proper environmental management of the Las Bambas mining project”
