Mercedes Araóz, vice-presidential candidate for PPK and former minister during Alan García’s last government, has atoned for her role over the 2009 killings at Bagua. These have made her a problematic candidate in some places. As a minister in 2009, some of her words and actions are thought to have helped precipitate the conflict against oil development on their ancestral lands. The clash near Bagua led to the deaths of nine police officers, 25 civilians, and more than 155 people injured (mostly from the Awajún-Wampis ethnic group).

The second-round elections coincide with the seventh anniversary of Bagua and Keiko Fujimori has been trying to take advantage of this. On 20 May, Araóz released a video with one of the group’s leaders in which she was seen asking for forgiveness in her Facebook page

This week, Araóz has also met the women who were victims of the forced sterilisation program in the 1990s and has promised that (if elected) they would receive reparations for what they have suffered. This is an issue that has not featured much in the campaign so far, but will undoubtedly provide this side of the campaign much-needed ammunition in its bid to break the deadlock in the opinion polls.
