According to the Forest People’s Programme, a UK-based environmental group, a key defender of saving primary rain forest from destruction in Ucayali region has received death threats. Washington Bolívar says that he and his family have received anonymous threats. He has been a leading campaigner against efforts to expand the agricultural frontier of the growing of palm oil. Several people in this part of Peru have been killed because of their opposition to agribusiness interests. The main target of Bolívar’s attention has been the activities of United Oils, a company domiciled in the Cayman Islands, registered on the London Stock Exchange and headed by a US businessman Dennis Melka of Czech origin. The company denies the allegation that it may be involved in intimidating local activists. The main debate relates to the extent to which new plantations of palm oil are on cleared primary jungle.
