On 19 June, the congressional commission investigating the activities of Martín Belaunde Lossio decided to include the first lady, Nadine Heredia, among those whose banking details it proposed to delve into. Belaunde Lossio, who was extradited from Bolivia earlier this month, was previously campaign manager for the ruling Nationalist Party (PNP) prior to the 2011 elections. Heredia has come in for renewed unwanted media attention in recent weeks for her extravagant luxury purchases. The PNP has branded the decision of the commission, headed by Marisol Pérez Tello of the right-wing PPC, as an act of ‘political vengeance’.

There can be no doubt here, as some commentators have pointed out, that there is more than a little political motivation to keep this investigation going as long as possible so as to tarnish the reputation of the presidential couple and their chances to field a candidate with some possibility of traction in the coming elections.
