The National Federation of Mine workers’ national strike was called for May 18 “for an indefinite period”. The unions are calling for more job security, better working conditions, the lifting of the cap on workers’ share of company profits and stricter regulation of out-sourcing of mining-related services. Although Ricardo Juárez, the president of the Federation said some 70 unions were backing the strike, in the first week it appears to have had little effect on mining output (as well as being over-shadowed in the national press by events around Tía María). The government’s robust response, declaring the strike unfounded, coupled with workers’ fears of losing their jobs meant that there was little effect on mining output in the first week.
