The proportion of Peruvians living in poverty fell in 2014, but at a much slower rate than in recent years. According to the National Statistics Institute, people living in poverty accounted for 22.7% of the population, down 1.2 percentage points on 2013. The proportion of people living in extreme poverty, mostly in the highlands, fell from 4.7% of the population to 4.3%. People living in extreme poverty in the highlands represented 9.2% of the population, down from 10.5% in 2013. According to the ministry of economy and finance, 85% of the reduction was attributable to targeted social policies, and only 15% to economic growth. Economic growth was sharply down in 2014.
