In the run up to the second round of elections taking place on June 4th, violence flared up between supporters of both candidates. The troubles began after provocative talk from Ollanta Humala. One of his followers supposedly threw an egg, which hit Alan García in the face, stirring up the APRA (García’s party) supporters.

There were small skirmishes in Lima and in Cusco, where the candidates were giving public addresses. Humala supporters tried to block García on his way to the airport in Cusco forcing him to take another route. His vehicles were ambushed by Humala supporters who attacked the cars with more eggs and stones.

Clashes continued in Cusco and Lima resulting in three people receiving bullet wounds and other minor injuries.
