Las Bambas: community tension amid 'secret' presidential visit

There is protest yet again at Las Bambas, the giant copper mine in Apurímac owned by the Chinese firm MMG Ltd. Tensions were heightened at the start of last week when rumours began to circulate of a visit by President Humala to the mine. On the night of 15/16 February, a group of 400 community members reoccupied the land.

Report criticises shortcomings in honouring Convention 169 commitments

A report analysing the implementation of ILO Convention 169 (Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989) by the Peruvian government has been released. Through case examples, the report analyses in detail a number of shortcomings, showing how the Peruvian government has failed to live up to its international commitments. It identifies recommendations.
