Fujimori pardon under evaluation
05 November 2017
President Kuczynski declared in Buenos Aires this week that the possibility of a pardon to ex-president Fujimori is strictly a medical issue and not a legal one. During a Latin American forum in Argentina he took a question on the issue and once again said that the impending pardon would be in the news at some point. He noted that Fujimori had made it possible for Peru to join APEC but that he was now in poor health and his future had to be evaluated. See more here.
On 29 October Luz Salgado, one of the leading Fujimorista legislators, had declared that it was a humiliation that the UN High Commissioner had said an international medical evaluation was required. She once more declared that a presidential pardon would be the most appropriate measure, but that her party will not present an application for it. Many jurists have declared that the pardon cannot be processed without it being requested. The Fujimoristas contend that granting it is the prerogative of the president.
