“The Chasqui played a fundamental role in the Inca Empire. They formed the empire’s communication system, racing up and down mountains at amazing speeds to deliver important messages. Teams of Chasqui could transport a message as far as 200 miles in a single day. Chasqui hopefuls underwent a fierce selection process but only the fittest and most able would go on to become legendary messengers”
The Peru Support Group (PSG) has teamed up with Amantani UK, an educational charity with projects in Peru, to offer you the chance to become a Chasqui for a day.
On Sunday 18th September we will be holding a marathon / half-marathon at Grafham Water, a beautiful reservoir just six miles from the historic town of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire (click here to see the route).
All participants will receive a timing chip on race day, allowing them to see how their talents compare to those of the Chasqui. However, great speed is not required and we encourage all those who wish to follow the scenic route at a more leisurely pace to also participate. Finally, we invite friends and family members to come down to support competitors and to learn more about the PSG and Peru at the accompanying Andean trade fair.
Event participants can earn the title of Chasqui in any of the following ways:
• Run a marathon and raise £800
• Run a half-marathon and raise £400
• Walk a marathon and raise £300
• Walk a half-marathon and raise £150
The schedule for the day is as follows:
08:30am: Registration and chip collection opens
09:45am: Registration closes
09:50am: Race briefing
10:00am: Races start
