Peru blocks plane carrying Evo from refuelling in Lima
A diplomatic spat between Mexico and Peru erupted over what Mexico claims was Peru’s refusal to allow the plane carrying Evo Morales to exile to refuel in Lima. In a statement made by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard shortly after Morales’ arrival in Mexico City, he alleged that Peru’s refusal was due to political reasons.

Prosecutor demands long sentences for killers of Ashaninka environmental defenders
In a legal first, Otoniel Jara, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation of the murder of four Ashaninka indigenous leaders, has requested the courts for a 35-year prison sentence for those identified as having planned and carried out the killings.

Today, 18 November, is the final day for parties to present their lists of candidates for the 26 January legislative elections. Former members of Congress, along with ministers from different governments in the past, are scrambling to board the train that, they hope, will lead to them being elected to the Congress.

Amazon synod: new thinking
Two weeks ago, the Catholic Church’s Amazon Synod ended with a report summarising its discussions. This is the first time that the Church has brought together the bishops from the Amazon region, religious and lay advisors, specialists and indigenous peoples for a focused analysis and discussion of the region and the Church’s role within it. The report seems to reflect a rethinking of the historical and traditional practices of the Church and of its relationship with the region, especially its indigenous peoples and natural environment.

To re-elect or not to re-elect…
Whether or not a member of the dissolved Congress can legally run as a candidate for the new Congress in January is a matter of heated debate. A number of former congressmen, beginning with APRA’s Mauricio Mulder, have put their names forward as candidates, as have prominent former fujimoristas (see next article). The Jurado Nacional de Elecciones (JNE) will decide this week if this is legal.

PSG Annual Conference - 16 November 2019
To all our readers, members and friends: we would like to invite you to our upcoming annual conference, taking place on 16 November 2019, at the Global Governance Institute, UCL (29-31 Tavistock Square, London).
This year we are very fortunate to count on the presence of Julia Cuadros, from Cooperacción a Peruvian human rights NGO and long-time PSG partner, and also of Virginia Pinares, a human rights defender from Cotabambas province, Apurímac region who has representated civil society at the various dialogue tables arising from the conflict over Las Bambas.
A detailed agenda of the day will be distributed soon. We hope to see you all there, so please put it in your diary. We plan to start at 10.30am and finish by 5pm. The PSG’s AGM will be held for members during the lunch break.
