It was with deep regret that we learnt last week of the death of Julio Cotler. Cotler, an anthropologist by training but a political sociologist in practice, has long been one of Peru’s outstanding intellectuals and an acerbic critic of successive governments that have ruled the country in recent decades. He was the author of many books since the late 1960s, of which perhaps the most outstanding was his ‘Clases Estado y nación’ (1978). He was also one of the key figures behind the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos (IEP), Lima’s premier intellectual hub. We will all miss him greatly.
