The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of Maxima Chaupe in the long-running case between her family and Yanacocha Mining. The Court established on 3 May that they were innocent of charges that they had forcibly occupied land known as Tragadero Grande in Cajamarca. Yanacocha responded by saying that they would pursue the case through civil litigation.

Yanacocha alleges that it acquired in 2001 the land as part of the Conga mining concession, while the Chaupe family claimed that it had had title since 1994. The family have been the target of constant threats and harassment in recent years, and have become a cause celebre in the longstanding conflict between communities and Yanacocha which has prevented the development of the giant Conga project. Yanacocha is owned jointly by Newmont Mining (of the United States), Minas Buenaventura (a large Peruvian mining company) and the International Finance Corporation (an arm of the World Bank).
