The latest opinion poll by Ipsos (published in El Comercio on 19 March) shows the relentless monthly fall in confidence in Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and his administration.

Those who express approval for the president fell to 32%, with 58% expressing disapproval. This compares with 63% approval in September, 55% in October, 51% in November, 48% in December, 43% in January and 38% in February. While other opinion polls produce different numbers, the trend they show is similar.

Support for Prime Minister Fernando Zavala is now down to 26%, even before the latest crisis hit Peru at the end of last week. Kuczynski has so far ruled out ordering a cabinet reshuffle to try to rally people’s support for his government.

However, opposition leaders do not appear to be increasing their popularity at Kuczynski’s expense.

Commenting on the latest poll figures, Alfredo Torres from Apoyo argues that the downwards trend in Kuczynski’s popularity will prove hard to reverse.
