Not wishing to waste a valuable opportunity to voice their cause, the leaders from Saramurillo, in Loreto, took to the streets in Lima on 19-20 November as the APEC meeting reached a climax.

The president of one of the jungle communities, Miguel Manihuari, declared that the protest march was intended to force the Kuczynski administration to respond to their demands. The communities have suffered repeated breaks in the North Peruvian pipeline operated by Petroperú.

Members of the communities arrived in Lima on 14 November. During their stay, they had had meetings with the prime minister, Fernando Zavala, and other government officials. However, they said that these had failed to provide adequate solutions to their complaints. We are here to “negotiate politically” Manihuari declared. The indigenous leaders maintained that the defence ministry had sought to force them to signs declarations against their will.

According to James Rodríguez, a community leader, the government has been presented with a list of seven demands, including remediation, the revision of oil contracts and the introduction of a law providing mechanisms for environmental monitoring.
