Huge swaths of the central jungle in Junín department have been destroyed by forest fires caused, it appears, by the practice of burning undergrowth to open up land for agricultural purposes. The worst affected area is around Satipo and along the Ene river. The lack of rain in the region has made it far harder to control secondary fires which have broken out across more than 20,000 hectares of land. Among those most affected are the Ashaninka indigenous peoples. The lack of an effective state presence in the region means that appeals for help have so far gone largely unheeded.
