According to the National Statistics Institute last week, the Peruvian economy expanded by 4.1% in the first half year (on the same period of 2015). In the whole of 2015, growth was 3.3%. The main reason for this acceleration is the expansion of physical output in the mining industry as a result of new mines (specifically Toromocho and Las Bambas, both Chinese-owned) coming on stream. Mineral exports were up 3.3%, with increased volumes of copper offsetting the continuance of depressed prices.
