Dani Rodrik, the Harvard economist, was in Peru last week for a conference on the future of the Peruvian economy. He said he was sceptical about the possibility of Peru returning to the sort of high growth rates it achieved in the decade between 2002 and 2012. To maintain that sort of growth rate, he argued, would mean countries entering into a process of industrialisation oriented to exports. “This is the only strategy that would sustain such growth rates” he is quoted as saying. The conference was organised by the Lima Chamber of Commerce.
