When asked by the newspaper La República whether they thought that there should be prior consultation before mining projects are permitted, only half of the 19 candidates replied that there should. Most of these were minor candidates with little or no chance of success. Of the front-runners, only César Acuña agreed about the need for ‘consulta’. Most did not bother to reply, including Kuczynski, García, Toledo, Urresti and Keiko Fujimori. Nor did Gregorio Santos, but that may be because he is in jail. Julio Guzmán ended giving a contradictory reply. Nano Guerra, the candidate for Solidaridad Nacional and Antero Flores Aráoz, that of his own party ORDEN, both said they were against the idea.
