On 19 December, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced his two running mates in the presidential campaign: Martín Vizcarra and Mercedes Aráoz. Vizcarra was president of Moquegua region until last year where he is generally deemed to have done a good job in securing community support for mining projects; Aráoz was the trade minister during Alan García’s second administration and as such opposed the changes to the investment code that gave rise to the so-called ‘Baguazo’ (see PSG article). She has since been working for the Inter-American Development Bank and, according to Kuczynski, she has “sacrificed a good salary” to take part in his campaign.
