The primaries within Unidad Democrática to select a presidential candidate ended up in bitter recriminations over supposed fraud and manipulation. They certainly did not live up the relatively high standards set by the Frente Amplio last month which selected Veronika Mendoza as its standard bearer.

Unidad Democrática is an amalgam of parties of the left, including the Communist Party and Patria Roja, with two main internal blocs: Unete por la Democracia and Democracia Directa (DD). The primary ended up a duel between the candidates of each bloc, Gonzalo García Núñez of Unete and Andrés Alcántara of DD.

The results were due to be published on 3 December, but by the weekend the whole experiment in candidate selection had descended into chaos, with the Unete leadership claiming that the count had been rigged by DD and that ballot boxes had been filched.

DD is closely linked with the Fonavistas, a tight-knit social movement cum pressure group which has long campaigned for the return of money that members had invested in a housing scheme introduced in the 1980s but wound up by the Fujimori government.

A break-up of Unidad Democrática is therefore on the cards. Though no official pronouncements have so far been made as we went to press, it is possible that those associated with Unete may shift towards supporting Mendoza. According to the electoral timetable, parties have until 12 December to announce alliances.
